At our Honda dealership in Van Nuys, we're helping drivers prepare for the upcoming REAL ID deadline—an essential step if you plan to board domestic flights or visit federal buildings after May 7, 2025. Below, we’ll break down what the REAL ID is, how to get one in California, and why it’s a smart move to plan ahead.

What Is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a federally compliant driver’s license or identification card. In California, it can be identified by a gold bear and white star in the card's top right corner. Beginning May 7, 2025, individuals will need a REAL ID or a valid U.S. passport to board commercial domestic flights, enter secure federal buildings, and access military bases.

How to Get a REAL ID in California

The California DMV has made applying for your REAL ID easier than ever. You can start online, beginning your application using the DMV’s REAL ID portal. You’ll enter personal information and upload required documents. Those documents include:

  • One document proving identity (e.g., valid passport or certified birth certificate)
  • One document proving your Social Security number (this must be the whole number, not just the last few digits)
  • Two proofs of California residency (e.g., utility bills, bank statements)

Once that’s done, schedule an appointment at your nearest DMV office. On the day of your appointment, bring your original documents and your application confirmation code for in-person verification.
